JOHN FOX, a well-known citizen of Monroe township, was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, August 22, 1845, the son of George and Mary (Browning) Fox, both also natives of Germany. The father, who was a farmer, came to America in 1853 and, settling in Sandusky county, Ohio, bought thirty-six acres of partly cleared land. Thirteen years later he removed to Lucas county, this state, where he leased a farm for one and a half years, and then came to Monroe township, Henry county, where they remained until their deaths, the father dying in 1878 and the mother in 1875. They were members of the Lutheran church, and were the parents of eleven children, six of whom died in Germany, the others being John, Mary, Fred, Samuel and Lizzie.
The subject of this sketch remained with his parents as long as they lived and has always followed farming, doing also some timbering as a side line, and being successful in both lines. In his early youth he worked out by the month to some extent, saving enough money to enable him to buy forty-nine acres of land in Monroe township, to which he has added from time to time until now he is the owner of one hundred and fifty-eight acres of fine land, nearly all under cultivation.
Mr. Fox married Miss Sophie Wesner, who was born in Crawford county, Ohio, in 1855, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Bowker) Wesner, natives of Pennsylvania and the parents of nine children, Sarah, Caroline, William, Sophie, Jacob, Isaac, Israel, Epsie and Wallace. To Mr. and Mrs. Fox have been born seven children, Lizzie, who died in infancy, Keturah, Marion, Hilanrah, Mary Matilda, Neely and Bartha, all at home. In politics Mr. Fox is a Democrat and has served as supervisor of Monroe township. He was formerly a member of Hamler Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, but has withdrawn from that body. He is well known and is liked by all who know him.
