HENRY F. POHLMAN - This substantial citizen and well-known stockman of Napoleon, was born in Lorain county, Ohio, on September 15, 1865, and is the son of August and Caroline (Mons) Pohlman. The father was a native of Germany and learned the butcher's trade in Berlin, while the mother was also a native of the same country. They married there, and about 1850 came to the United States, locating first in Cleveland, Ohio, and some years later they located on a farm near Alcyra, where the father folIowed farming and butchering. In 1884 the family removed to Defiance county, about eight miles west from Napoleon, where he followed similar pursuits until the time of his accidental death in 1887, at the age of fifty-four years. His widow now resides in Napoleon, at the age of sixty-nine years. The father was a German Lutheran in religious affiliation, while the mother is a Catholic. Their children are as follows: Louis resides in Akron, Ohio; Charles died at Delta, this state; Henry, the subject; Gust resides at Wellington, Ohio; and Frank, of Napoleon.
Henry F. Pohlman spent his boyhood days on the Lorain county farm, and attended the common schools. At the age of fifteen years he went to work in a store, where he remained for six months, and then engaged in the butchering business in Napoleon in partnership with his brother Charles, which continued for about nine years. He then formed a business association with Jacob Brown, which was engaged in dealing in livestock and which has been very successful. Both partners are well known for their energy, sagacity and square dealing and have won hosts of friends.
Mr. Pohlman married Miss Dora Schulty, who was born in Napoleon township, this county, the daughter of Henry Schulty and they have five children, Lena, Alta, Henry, Jr., Emma and Frederick. In politics Mr. Pohlman is a Democrat and has taken an active part in public affairs. He is now serving his sixth year as a member of the Napoleon city council, and on January 1, 1905, he was elected a member of the board of education, of which he is president. In religion he is a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, while his fraternal relations are with the Royal Arcanum and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
