Obituary:

BIOGRAPHICAL. Clara Champion, daughter of Jacob and Barbara Baker, wan born July 14 18t0, and died near Florida, Henry county, Ohio, December 7, 1884, aged 24 years, 4 months and 23 days. Again have the shadows of death fallen thickly upon the father and children who, but on Saturday, the 6th of this month, stood mourners at the grave of a beloved son who had passed away. She was married to Abraham Champion, somewhat over two years ago, and to them were born two children, one, an infant babe, was laid away quite young, and the other child is still living. She, too, was a victim to that fell destroyer, consumption, with which she had for some time been a sufferer, and just in the full vigor of womanhood, amid the happy scenes of life, surrounded by many loving friends, she was so early called away from among us forever. In the springtime of life, when the hope and aspirations of youth were budding into young womanhood, when the noontide glare of a useful life was luring her happily onward, death overtakes her. At home and abroad, among her friends, she has ennobled her life by always showing the highest regard for her parents and neighbors. She loved and was beloved by all who knew her. The flowing tears of father, children, and friends, of schoolmates and classmates, and the many expressions of sorrow on every side speak plainly of her loss to the community. Down the path of her short life are written, in letters of gold, the many good qualities of womanhood and the noble life she lived; free from guilt, rich in common sense, sincere in friendship, and pure of life. Oh, how hard it was to give her up, to say farewell, Clara! and know that we must see her no more on earth. But we have the consolation to know that she has crossed over the river and is on the evergreen shore, free from care and responsibilities, pain and sorrow, and now tunes her voice to sing the music of angelic hosts. Her funeral took place at the German Reformed Church, in Florida, Ohio, of which she was a member. The pastor conducted the services in the German language and the pastor of the M. E. church in English, after which her body was followed by a large procession of friends and neighbors to what is called the Cole Cemetery, some three and a half miles south east of Florida, there to remain until the resurrection morning, while her spirit has gone to join her classmates in the Better Land. May the Great Head of the Church sustain and preserve the father, children, and many friends into everlasting life, so that they too, when they are called upon to pass away, may meet their loved ones on the evergreen shore. And, God grant that the husband, who now mourns the loss of a beloved wife, may seek an interest in Christ, that he, too, when called upon to pass through like affliction, he may meet his companion in that home where parting is not known.

Then Clara, now farewell,
Though sorrow fills our hearts,
And deepest grief our bosoms swell,
The bitter tear will start.

We all hope at last to meet you
When life's trials on earth are done,
In our father's shining mansion,
Where affliction never comes./p>
