Obituary:

On Friday hut the saw mill of Mr. John Batdorf, at Damascus, in Liberty township, was the scene of a frightful accident, which resulted in the death of a 16 year old son of Mr. Batdorf. We glean the following particulars from County Commissioner Daum, who lives in the neighborhood: The father was away from home that day, and a neighbor coming to the mill wishing some corn ground (there was a corn crusher connected with the saw mill) Mahlon, the son, volunteered to start the machinery and accommodate the neighbor, which was against the wishes of his mother, who advised him to leave the machinery alone. The mill was started, and in attempting to place a band on a wheel the young man used a slender rail, which broke, throwing him down among the wheels and machinery of the saw mill, in which he was caught, crushing one arm to a jelly from the fingers to the shoulder, braking his hip, and otherwise frightfully mangling him. The young man had a revolver in his hip pocket, which clogged the machinery, or he would I have been ground to pieces, It took the combined effort of seven neighbors to extricate the young man, who was wedged in the machinery. Dr. Haag was summoned, who did all in his power to alleviate the sufferings of the poor fellow, but life was extinct two hours after the accident. The young men was conscious to the last, and seeing his mother weeping beside his bed he said: "Don't cry, mother, I will be all right in a few days, with the exception of my arm." The terrible accident cast a deep gloom over the entire community end many were the expressions of sympathy for the bereaved patents.
