Obituary:

Just after we had gone to press last Wednesday, we were informed of a terrible accident which occurred sometime early Wednesday morning, in which an old man was literally burned to death. In our efforts to get at the very bottom facts, we learned the following: William Bellinger, the victim of this horrible affair, has been for a time engaged as locktender on the Miami & Erie canal, at Buoklin's lock, about two miles west of Texas, Ohio. On Tuesday, Supt. Meecham passed through this place, paying off the canal help and we understand he paid this man three months wages. He was around Tuesday afternoon and evening attending to his duties as usual, but on Wednesday he came up missing when a search was begun. His brother on going to his home which was an old building near the lock, found the house burned to the ground. A search was at once made among the ashes, and to their horror, on prying up a pile of the debris, they found the charred remains of Mr. Bellinger. How, and at what time the fire originated will probably remain a mystery. Mr. B. was about 65 years of age at the time of his death; was an honest, peaceful and up right citizen. Having served in the late war credited with being a number one soldier and citizen, and his sad death cast a gloom over the entire community in which he resided.
