| Obituary: Suspicious Circumstances Surrounding the Death of a Woman at Holgate. Last Saturday afternoon Coroner Cloud received the following telegram from the Mayor of Holgate: "Suspicious death. Body to be sent away this afternoon. Telegraph order to hold corpse and come immediately." Accordingly the coroner, accompanied by Dr. Bloomfiold, proceeded to Holgate, where he found the facts corresponding with the telegram. The subject of the suspicions circumstances was the wife of Isaac Sakolsky, a Jewish clothier, who, when the Coroner began arranging for a surgical examination into the cause of the death, objected, saying that it was contrary to the belief of the Jewish people. The Coroner informed him that the peculiar beliefs of a people were subservient to the laws of the land, and proceeded with the examination, the result of which was the determination that an abortion had been the immediate cause of the woman's death. Upon search of the premises a foetus, apparently about five months old, was found in the yard where it bad been buried. From evidence gleaned, regarding how and by whose hand the revolting deed had been committed, the Coroner deemed it prudent to order the arrest of Dr. Becker, who was accordingly taken into custody, but was afterward released on bail and Sept. 28th set for a preliminary hearing. | ||
