Liberty Man Suicide

Coroner Boyer was called Saturday Saturday night to the banks of the Maumee river, two miles east of the Damascus bridge, to view the remains of Romanzo Steambarge, aged 76, of Liberty Center, who had committed suicide by drowning in the river.

Steambarge, who reside alone, was missed the middle of last week from his usual haunts in Liberty, and the discovery of his boat floating on the river and cane on the-bank in some brush led his son, Ralph, of Grand Rapids, to believe his father had ended his life in the river. The son and a grandson, Melvin Young, of Toledo, dragged the river around Turkeyfoot creek for two days and Saturday evening hooked on to the body in 8 feet of water.

The suicide had put a large stone in a gunny sack and tied it around his waist before jumping in the river. A watch in his pocket stopped at 10:15 o'clock.

Steambarge lost his wife last winter and since has shown signs of despondency. Up until three years ago he was employed by the National Supply Co., of Toledo, but had been retired on a pension.
