Mr. Jerome Straley, an Old Pioneer, Buried Monday
The Custar Blacksmith Has Plenty of Work Without going to Church
Jerome T. Straley, a veteran of the late civil war, passed away last Saturday, 1st Inst., in Belmore. O., aged 59 years, 9 months, and 9 days.
The subject of the above notice was born in Juniata county. Pennsylvania, February 22d, 1841; came with his parents to Allen county, O., in 1849; was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Rushmond, February 3d, 1866, and came to Belmore the same year, where he has resided for the greater part of the time ever since. In 1861, at the call of his country, he enlisted in the 81st O. V. I., August 30th, and served three years.
He was in fifteen battles, including the celebrated and bloody fields of Shiloh and Corinth, and followed Sherman In hts famous march to the sea. He was a man of iron constitution, and it is the testimony of his comrades that no truer or braver soldier ever marched in line.
Thus, one by one, these honored veterans are passing away. His widow and all of the children - five sons and three daughters - survive him.
The interment took place last Monday, at 2 p. m., and a large concourse of people gathered to see the dead hero laid to rest. The usual religious exercises were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by the resident ministers, and the Grand Army ritual was read at the grave. The funeral procession was led by the cornet band.
