On Thursday afternoon about two o'clock Charles Krotz died from the infirmities of age at the age of 87 years and 15 days on his estate on the northern city boundary. Born in the Grand Duchy of Baden, he cams to this country as a 10 year old boy with his parents, at first to the state of New York. Already in the following year the family settled in Stark County, Ohio, and in 1850 Charles Krotz came to Defiance County, where he settled in Mark Township on 160 acres of government land. He made the land workable and farmed it until the year 1864; then he sold it and became the owner of a farm in Tiffin Township, which he later sold to the county for the poor farm. Since then he has resided on the nice farm on the north bank of the Maumee.

His first wife, Elisabeth Brubaker, he married in 1851; she died in the year 1871, after she had presented him with 11 children. still living of these are Sarah Hall in Tiffin Township, Filmore, Charles W. and Daniel F. Krotz from here; Mrs. Elisabeth Sanford in Noble Township; Mrs. Lavina Welsch in Henry County; Alvaro Krotz in Chicago; Linfred Krotz in Rawhide, Nevada; Mrs. Clara Redel of Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was born on the 18th of April 1839 in the Grand Duchy of Baden, came to this country as a 13 year old maid and resided at first in Syracuse, N.Y. She married here J. B. Schöninger, with whom she lived for many years in Freehold, N.Y. About the year 1865 the family came to Defiance, and the deceased resided here until about ten years after the death of her husband. Since then she has managed the household of her son Otto in Toledo. Surviving her are four children: Mrs. I. J. Höffel and Louis Schöninger of here, Otto and Miss Emma Schöninger in Toledo. Magdalena Gleisberg, daughter of Mrs. Louise Gleisberg, on Thursday evening about 5:30, died a quiet death in the hospital, after an operation just a few hours pearlier for appendicitis. She was born in Defiance on the 3rd of June 1886, received on the 22nd of August of the same year Holy Baptism and renewed on the 8th of April 1900 the baptismal vows in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, to which she remained faithful and industrious up until her end. Grown up to maidenhood, as much as she was able, she bravely took her mother under her wing and always applied herself to an exemplary way of life. Not only will her mother and siblings painfully miss Lena, but also the Sunday school of her congregation where she had acted as teacher with zest and love and success.
On the 22nd of January Magdalena Gleisberg became ill with symptoms which pointed to appendicitis. There was no lack of medical arts and faithful care; it seemed at the start of the prior week, as if there was still hope. But Thursday morning the doctor decided that as the last resort an operation was called for. The patient was therefore brought to the hospital, and about 1 o'clock the doctors completed the operation, which revealed an absolutely fatal complication of internal diseases. A few hours later the patient sufferer was rescued from all misery by a gentle death. She leaves behind her mother, sisters Mrs. Ida Wagner of here, Mrs. Klara Baker of Portland, Me., and Miss Emilie Gleisberg of here.
The mortal remains were brought Sunday afternoon from the former residence and the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, under the direction of Pastor L. H. Ziemers, to the Riverside Cemetery to be laid to their final rest. May the Highest consoler be near to the grieving relatives in this time of need!
