Ignaz Sabathy
Through suicide, Ignaz Sabathy in despair makes an end to his life.
From melancholia or despair, on last Saturday about noon, Ignaz Sabathy made an end to his existence, in the kitchen of his residence on the west edge of town by slitting his throat with a garden knife. His wife, who was the only eyewitness, at once informed the workers at the neighboring factory of the Defiance Carriage Co., and as these rushed to the scene, they found the man lying in his blood. He was still alive, but died before Police-Chief Hubbard and Doctor Zellers, who had also been summoned, had reached the house. Justice of the Peace Maxwell conducted the legally required coroner's inquest after which the remains were take to Hoffmann's establishment and there prepared for burial, which took place Monday afternoon under the direction of Father Gloden.
As Mrs. sabathy related, her husband had had thoughts of suicide for a long time and had often tried to convince her that she should die with him. She had refused and on Friday had gathered all the weapons to herself, but he had hidden a knife, with which he did the terrible deed. She maintained that he had tried to convince her to die, after he had already given his own death wound.
Sabathy came from the Steiermark in Austria and was about 55 years old; he had no children. He was a smith and worked for a long time at Turnbull's and later for the Defiance Carriage Co. For even longer he had been without work and that seems to have bothered him greatly. The people (the Sabathys) had associated with no-one peaceably or in friendly [manner], and one might rightly doubt their full sanity (?mental accountability).
On Monday morning the acting coroner Maxwell heard Mrs. Sabathy, Doctor Zeller, John Rodel, Police Chief Hubbard and many other people in this case and on the day after gave his verdict of suicide.
