After he had battled the all-conquering Death for almost a week, on Friday morning about 4 o'clock Donald R. Hudson had to surrender. On the morning of the 30th of June he told his parents that he had been plagued for quite some time by pains on the right side of his abdomen. In a few days this increased to such an extent, that the doctors recommended an operation, which took place on the 3rd of July in the hospital by Doctors Winn and Reynolds, assisted by Doctor Ury. From the very beginning the doctors had little hope, since the pain had already spread. And their fears proved justified, as on Friday morning about 4 o'clock the youth took his last breath. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Hudson and would have been, had he lived to the 23rd of July, 16 years old. Besides the parents, he is survived by one younger sister and one older brother. His mortal remains were taken Sunday afternoon from the parental residence outside Defiance by the canal to the Riverside Cemetery for burial. Pastor G. A. Wieland of the Episcopal Church conducted the funeral service.
Elisabeth Moss, wife of Erasmus D. Moss and daughter of the deceased married couple Johann and Katharine Wohn, died Tuesday morning about 1 o'clock as the result of a stroke, which he had suffered on Sunday. Already a few years ago she had had such a stroke, from which he had never completely recovered; so her death in this manner was not totally unexpected. She was born in Defiance on the 7th of October 1854 and has since brought her life to 54 years, 9 months and 6 days. On the 7th of November 1886 she married Erasmus D. Moss, who with the son George and the daughters Anna and Henriette survive. Also her brother George P. Wohn and sister Miss Henriette Wohn remain behind. From her earliest childhood on, the deceased belonged to the St. John's Lutheran congregation and for many years was a faithful and devoted member of the Ladies society "Harmonia." Whoever knew her, would have to say of her, that she had been faithful and exemplary in her way of life.
The burial will be Thursday afternoon in the Riverside Cemetery; the funeral service will be at 1:30 in the family residence and at 2 in the St. John's Lutheran Church under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess.
Emma Müller, born Schieber and wife of Mr. Jakob Müller, died on Monday morning of this week about 5 o'clock in her residence on Emmett Street from breast cancer, which an operation undertaken a few months ago had failed to cure. She was born on the 3rd of October 1855 in Toledo, Ohio, as a daughter of the married couple Friedrich and Christine Schieber, still residing there. On the 15th of April 1879 she married in Toledo our fellow citizen Jakob Müller, with whom she has since resided in Defiance. Of the 5 children, whom she presented to her husband, still living are Mrs. Gertie Michaels in Toledo, the Misses Alta and Mabel Müller of here. Also left behind are the adoptive son Fred. Müller also from here, as well as her infirm with age parents in Toledo, two unmarried brothers and two married sisters, one of whom being Mrs. Fritz Antener.
The deceased belonged to the German Ladies' Sickness Aid Society and the Ladies Society of the St. John's Reformed congregation and contributed her share to the prosperity of both societies as well as to her congregation. She was also a faithful friend of the 'Herold', as she never let an opportunity pass, when she could be helpful to it. Honor to her memory and our most sincere sympathy to the family!
The burial will take place Friday afternoon under the direction of Pastor N. E. Bitz. The funeral service will be in the residence at 1:30 and in the St. John's Reformed Church at 2 o'clock.
