John Scheuermann
John Scheuermann's illness has led to death. On Thursday evening, severely plagued for months by Bright's kidney disease, the man fell into a deep sleep and on the next morning about 9 o'clock he quietly died in his sleep.
He was born on the 10th of November 1833 in Hinbach, Hesse-Darmstadt, and therefore was 72 years, 2 months and 2 days old. He came to this country in April 1859 and after a short stay in Indiana, settled in Cincinnati. When the civil war broke out in 1861, John Scheuermann joined McCook's famous 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment, which was composed mainly of German Turners, for the union in the field, and served fearless and loyal, until in the memorable Battle of Chickamauga a ball smashed his right upper thigh, so that the leg had to be amputated. Then he returned to Cincinnati and remained there for another three years, until he came to Defiance, to live the rest of his days here. so long as his financial affairs allowed it, he worked as a cigar maker, [but] in the last 15 years he dealt only in candies, cigars and writing utensils. surviving are his widow, -- a born Sandkuhler, whom he married on the 30th of January 1866 in Cincinnati -- with the five children residing here, Mrs. Anna Houck, Georg, John, and Andreas and Miss Emilie Scheuermann. one son and one daughter died before him.
John Scheuermann occupied no offices and also did not distinguish himself by any special abilities. But he was a man of his word, a loyal friend, a good citizen, and one of those heroes who gave body and lives on the blood-soaked entrenchments of the battlefield for us and our descendants. Honor to the memory of the departed old comrades and friends!
The burial took place Sunday afternoon under the direction of Pastor W. H. Bunge from the former residence and the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Bishop Post of the Grand Army marshaled some comrades for the last muster honor guard.
