Robert Futsch
In his apartment above Schlembach's Restaurant, where he had worked for the past three months as cook, Robert Futsch died Sunday night after a short illness of asthma. He came to this area about three years ago from Lexington, Ky., and lived most of that time with his brother-in-law Theodor Michenfelder in Noble Township, who as far as we know was his only relative in this part of the country. The deceased leaves behind a brother in Lexington, Ky., who upon receiving the report of the death, authorized a proper burial at his expense. Father Franz Rulf
In his home in East Defiance on Wednesday evening of the week past, Franz Rulf, 81 years and 16 days of age, died of complicated illnesses, which as dropsy and asthma had caused him much misery in the last stgae of his life. He was born on 7 January 1826 in Grossleid near Magdeburg Germany, came to America in the year 1850, and settled in May of that year in Defiance, where he, through industry and thrift, did so well as a farmer that that in his old age he was not plagued by lack of provisions. In the year 1857, he entered into holy matrimony with Katharine Bässler, who on 7 August 1902 preceded him to a better Hereafter. From this marriage resulted four sons and four daughters, namely Frank, Samuel, Henry and Charles Rulf in this area, Mrs. Henry Young and Mrs. Ed. Colwell in this area, Mrs. Art. White in Toledo and Mrs. Aaron Mollencup in Monclova.
Father Rulf joined the German Methodist Episcopal Church here in 1869, and he remained, as his shepherd of souls will testify, faithful to the same. He bore his troubles with patience, as he said: Jesus had suffered much more for me. And as he on Tuesday, before his entry into his eternal Home, attended again the blessed supper, his joy was so great that he wanted to witness thru song. His children also did everything possible, to make his last days easy and to relieve his pain. Besides the already mentioned relatives, Father Rulf leaves behind four sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law and eleven grandchildren.
His remains were laid to rest Saturday afternoon in Riverside cemetery, under the direction of Pastor William Jauch of the German Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides the pastor of the congregation, the presiding elder of the district Pastor J. J. Bockstabler from Detroit, Mich., and the local United_Brethren preacher Schupp took part in the burial. The pallbearers were Jakob Heimlicher, T. Seybold, Wm. Geiger, Leonhard Wilsberg, William H. Conn and Walter Kruse.
