In addition to what was written last week concerning the passing of long-time Defiance county citizen Franz C. Engel, we add the following:
Franz C. Engel was born 10 November 1832 in Ringenberg, Oldenberg, where he spent his youth. In 1853 he came to this country and immediately settled in south Richland, where with diligence he achieved success in agriculture in a few years. There in 1859 he married Miss Magdalene Eis [19 Aug 1859], who with eight children - five sons and three daughters - survives him. As a result of an eye complaint, Mr. Engel had to give up work, as a result spending many years in retirement at Holgate.
There, one misfortune after another befell him. A wound to the big toe led to blood poisoning, necessitating amputation of the foot. Then his eye complaint became so bad that he could almost not see anymore. And finally came a stroke, from which he suffered a long time, until released by Death. The surviving children are: Peter, Jakob, Johann, Wilhelm and Charles Engel, Mrs. Minnie Baker, Mrs. Eva Groll, and Mrs. Lizzie Wilson. Besides survive [the deceased] his brother Jakob Engel living in Holgate and 18 grandchildren. One daughter preceded him in death.
The remains will be buried Friday morning in the Brinkmann cemetery in Florida under the direction of the Lutheran Pastor H. A. Bentrup from Holgate.

He was born in Chambersburg, Pa., and came as a 7 year old with his parents to Stark county, Ohio. In 1848, the family moved to Delaware Township, where the deceased spent many years in agriculture. He followed the same occupation later in Adams Township, but then moved to this city and resided here until his death. For the last few years he regularly went to his job in the Defiance machine factory. He leaves behind a widow from his second marriage, eight children and five siblings, including Mrs. Ewing and Jakob Brubaker. Frank Xavier Groselle
In his home [at] 409 Nicholas Street, Tuesday morning at 8:30, Frank Xavier Groselle died from a chronic kidney condition, which had plagued him for many years and had been his misery [lit., bed of thorns] for the last few months. He was born here on 9 August 1855, the son of the deceased couple Joseph and Sophia Groselle and, with the exception of a short period spent in Archbold, O., has been here from the cradle to the grave. In his youth he trained as a photographer and remained true to his chosen profession. On 6 February 1889 he married the school teacher, Miss Elisabeth Kiesewetter, who survives him with their 15 year old son, John Francis. Other survivors include siblings Mrs. Patrick Moore, Mrs. Jacob Partee, Mrs. Wm. Partee, Joseph and Andrew Grosells. The deceased was an upright person, who remained true to his stated beliefs. That was especially evident in his term as member and president of the city council during the bitter conflict of interest between the taxpayers and the lighting monopoly. All honor to his memory!
His remains, after a funeral service Friday morning at 9 o'clock in the English Catholic Church, will be temporarily interred in the Riverside chapel crypt.
