Johann Hohenberger, one of the oldest Germans in the whole of Defiance county and the oldest pioneer of the South Ridge to be sure, died quietly in his sleep Tuesday morning about 6 o'clock in the residence of his daughter Mrs. Orlando Finn in South Richland at the age of 90 years and 34 days. Since the elderly couple were no longer able to maintain their own household, he had moved a few months ago with his elderly wife from Defiance to the aforementioned daughter, where from her and the other relatives he was lovingly tended to until the end of his life.
Born on the 7th of September 1821 in the district of Hof, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, in the year 1848 Johann Hohenberger immigrated with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hohenberger, and his siblings to this country and settled on the South Ridge, which at that time was still a wilderness. In the year 1855 he married Christine Dietsch, who survives him. She gave life to seven children, of whom two died. The surviving children are Mrs. Sophia Degler and Mrs. Emilie Finn in South Richland, Mrs. Anna Sauerbrey in Zanesville, Ohio, Mrs. Therese Meyer in Paulding and Heinrich Hohenberger in Defiance. Also left behind are the sisters Mrs. Lisbeth Struntz in Ft. Wayne and Mrs. Henriette Schmidt in Defiance, the brother Killian Hohenberger in Defiance, 25 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. With the advancing age, Mr. and Mrs. Hohenberger left their nice farm 18 years ago and moved to East Defiance, where up until a few weeks ago they had a very comfortable existence and enjoyed for the most part good physical health.
The burial of the mortal remains will take place Thursday morning here in the Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess. The funeral service [will be held] at 9 o'clock in the former residence and at 10 o'clock in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
