In his residence on Clinton Street on Sunday morning after a lengthy lingering illness, George Mallett died at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 19 days. He was born in Freethorp, Northup County, England and immigrated to this country in 1855. After he worked for about 15 years at his trade as miller in the cities of Coldwater, Mich., Logansport, Ind., Maumee, O., and Medina, N.Y., he came in 1869 to Defiance and remained resident here until his death. At first he worked for the mill owners Wilhelm & Brown, from 1873 on he and his brother E. R. Mallett devoted themselves to the making of grave memorials. He served his fellow citizens in the First Ward for two terms on the city council and also took an active interest in the welfare of our city. He was twice married. The first wife, who died in the year 1865, presented him with three children, of which only the son J. Gilbert, living here, is still alive. The second wife survives with seven children -- six sons and one daughter. The remains were buried in the Riverside cemetery on Tuesday afternoon about 3 o'clock from the English Methodist Church under the direction of Pastor S. L. Roberts and under the auspices of the Tuendawie Lodge of the Freemasons.
