Mrs. Clara J. Ayers, a born Porter and widow of Alfred A. Ayers, who died in November 1900, died quietly in her sleep on Sunday afternoon about 3:30 after a short illness, from the infirmities of age. She was born on the 12th of June 1834 in the state of Vermont, and came as a child with her parents to Ohio, Where the family settled in Milan. In that place she married on the 21st of January 1858 with Alfred A. Ayers and then came with him to Defiance, where they remained resident until their deaths. Three of their seven children, namely Berta, Alfred Lincoln and Virgil C. Ayers, died before her. The surviving children are: John Porter Ayers, in Chicago, Mrs. Anna Graham and Mrs. Gertrude Whetmore in Denver, Col., and Dex Ayers of here. The deceased had brought time of her earthly pilgrimage to 77 years, 3 months and 12 days. Her remains were buried in the Riverside Cemetery Tuesday afternoon, after Pastors B. W. Slagle and C. E. Shields had held a funeral service in the family residence No. 303 Second Street.
Mrs. Dorothea Otte, a born Wendt, whose portrait and life story we brought you in the "Herold" about five weeks ago on the occasion of her 90th birthday, died peacefully in her sleep Monday morning about 10 minutes past 3 o'clock in the residence of her grandson Johann F. Vogel. The deceased was born on the 19th of August 1821 at Gommern in Hannoyer and shortly after her birth baptized in Schnackenburg, and also confirmed there in the year 1835. In August 1854 she immigrated to this country, and settled with some relatives on a farm in Ridgeville Township, Henry County. In April of the year 1856 she was married the widower Cord Otte, who died on the 10th of May 1892. She gave life to only one son, but he died a long time ago. Of near relatives remain the adopted dauggter widow Maria Nagel, the three grandchildren Johann F. Nagel, Wilhelm Nagel and Mrs. Dore Koppenhöfer, the brother Johann Joachim Wendt and the sister Mrs. Sophio Kruse on the North Ridge, as well as the sister Mrs. Wilhelmine Dittmer in Defiance.
The burial took place on Wednesday, just after Pastor H. Schult had held a funeral service at 10:30 in the former residence and 11 o'clock in the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Nora Ward, wife of Oscar Ward, died Saturday in her residence in Wauseon, Ohio, where the family moved from Highland Township about four years ago, at the age of 54 years from a kidney ailment. She leaves behind her widower and three daughters Mrs. Dell Steingass, and Mrs. Iva Leona Deckrasch in Highland township and Miss Ethel Ward in the family residence. The remains will be brought to the residence of her daughter Mrs. Steingass and given Christian burial Monday morning in the Cemetery in Ayersvllle.
Widow Maria Eder, a born Ott, died Monday shortly after noon in the residence of her son Andreas Eder on Clinton Street, at the age of approximately 74 years. She was born in Germany but came young to this country, and as, as far as is known to us, spent the greater part of her life in Defiance. Her husband Matthäus Eder preceded her in death a few years ago, also two of their children, namely two daughters, died before her. The remaining children are Andreas Eder of here, John Eder in Memphis, Tenn., Albert Eder in Idaho, Mrs. Veronika Reynolds in Buffalo, N.Y. The burial took place Wednesday morning in the Riverside Cemetery, after Father J. P. Gloden had held a funeral service in the St. John's Catholic Church.
Anna Katharine Minna, wife of John Egler and a daughter of the late Heinrich and Margarethe Schatz from the South Ridge, died on Thursday evening about 20 minutes before 10 o'clock after a lengthy illness in the family residence in North Richland from lung and kidney illnesses. She was born on the 6th of September of the year 1846 in Wüstenselbitz, Münchberg district, Bavaria and in 1848 with her parents came to this country, where the family settled at once in Pleasant township, Henry County. In autumn of the year 1867 She married Mr. John Egler and moved with him to his farm in North Richland, where she remained resident until her passing. Of the five children to whom she gave life, one infant boy died in infancy. She had brought her life to 65 years and 1 day.
The deceased leaves behind a widower, three sons John, Henry and Frederick in North Richland, the daughter Mrs. Sadie Overly in Okolona, as well as the following siblings: John Schatz in Highland, Adam Schatz in Pleasant, George C. Schatz in South Richland, Wilhelm Schatz in Pleasant, Mrs. Margarethe Steamier in Highland, Mrs. John Fraser, Mrs. Emma Fender and Mrs. Franz Reichmann in Pleasant.
The burial took place Sunday morning in Independence Cemetery, after a funeral service had been held in the former residence. At the burial, Pastor L. H. Ziemer of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran congregation officiated.
