I. J. Rödel
Loss of left arm
While at work in the factory of the American Steel Package Co. on Saturday afternoon, the 20 year old J. J. Rödel, a son of Ed. Rödel of Douglas Street, suffered injuries to the left arm, which necessitated amputation of the same. Against all instructions, the young man had put (leaned?) his bent arm on the platform of a punch press (?stamping machine) when it started up and and mangled the arm so badly that it had to be removed five inches below the shoulder. The amputation was performed in Maplewood Hospital by Dr. Rigrisch, assisted by doctors Zeller, Stevens and Ury.

Klara Agnes Klose
It is especially sad [to report] the death this past Friday night, like a bolt out of the blue, of Klara Agnes Klose, the second eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph and Anna [Winkler] Klose, of 1009 Grove Street. The girl had been with many companions that evening in the Grand Theater, and on the way home had accompanied her sister Helene, who was attending a society evening in the home of Mr. J. C. Miller. There just before midnight Klara was suddenly stricken by a severe indisposition, rushed into an adjoining room and there fell unconscious into the arms of her friends. She was conveyed at once to the nearby parental home, where the hurriedly summoned doctor made all possible attempts at resuscitation, which sadly were all in vain. The girl had been stricken by an epileptic attack -- Klara had been plagued by this dreadful disease for years -- without warning, without even a hint, [and] had been torn from the circle of her family and friends.
Klara Agnes Klose was born on 6 September 1891 here in Defiance and leaves behind her parents, two brothers Joseph and Franz and two sisters Helene and Anna. Along with the family members, a wider circle of friends mourn the death a a girl dear to alll. The burial took place Tuesday morning from the St. John's Catholic Church in Riverside cemetery. Father N. Espen from The Bend celebrated the funeral service. The pallbearers were Emelie Masanz, Helene Pfirmann, Dora Desch, Leonore Hengstler, Lena Kruggel and Maisie Geiger. [d. 4 Jan 1907]
