Gone to Rest on Sunday at noon is Friedrich Fritz, who for many years resided on an estate not far from Standley. His misery stretched over a period of many years and may for the most part have resulted from a ruined condition of the nerves. Friedrich Fritz was born in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the year 1827 and as far as we can determine, came to America in the Fifties. He resided at first in Cleveland, then for a while in Henry and Putnam Counties, and the last part of his life again in Henry County. Earlier he had worked as a mason. The building in which N. G. Woodward has his apothecary was built under his supervision and assistance. But for the greater part of the time he practiced agriculture. He leaves behind a widow, three sons and two daughters. The remains were buried Tuesday morning from the St. Stephan's Lutheran Church on the South Ridge under the direction of Pastor H. Diemer. After the lengthy, wearying bout of illness, we cannot begrudge the deceased his eternal Rest.
The Hon. Henry Hardy died last Saturday morning about 2 o'clock in his residence on Wayne Street from the infirmities of age. Born on the 28th of June 1827 in West Troy in the state of New York, he came with his parents in 1836 to Tuscarawas county, O., and remained there until the year 1850, after he had learned the tailor trade as a youth (?apprentice), which didn't really appeal to him. In 1850 he came to Defiance county and resided here from then up to his death. At first he practiced agriculture, but then studied law from 1857 to 1863, during which time he served our county as recorder, and a few years later was admitted to practice (law). Then he served four years as states attorney, from 1873 to 1875 and again from 1878 to 1880 as a member of the lower house of the State Legislature and also once Mayor of the city of Defiance. In the years when he was not in office, he attended to his law practice and remained at it to a great age with great physical and mental ?enjoyment. Only in the past two years had he become feeble, but not bedridden; and up until the last few weeks he daily took his accustomed stroll (walk about). He was a faithful Democrat, a conscientious official, friendly to all in conversation, and in every respect a good citizen.
Mr. Hardy was thrice married and all three wives had preceded him in death. From the first marriage, the son George remains, who is active in the newspaper business in Okolona. From the second marriage are the daughter Miss Mary, living here and the son John whose present location is not known. And from the third marriage the daughter Mrs. Henriette Heth from Montpelier, Ohio survives.
The mortal remains of Henry Hardy were buried on Tuesday late in the afternoon under the auspices of the Knights Templar in the Riverside Cemetery, after a funeral service was held at 4 o'clock in the Episcopal Church under the direction of Pastor Paul Ernst.
