Donald Barber
Drowned in the Auglaize, from which he had rescued a playmate
In fourteen year old Donald Barber, the eldest son of the Presbyterian preacher Arthur Barber here, on Wednesday afternoon about 4 o'clock, our rivers have claimed another victim. Donald and an also unskilled at swimming playmate by the name of Ledyard Gettmann were at the aforementioned time at Koctor Sites boathouse, which is behind the Barbers' home in the Auglaize, watching from there some youngsters swimming from the further bank. There the young Gettmann lost his hold and slid into the water. His comrade was guickly at hand and helped him to secure his footing. But in doing that, Donald leaned too far over and also plunged into the water, and sank immediately. Gettmann called loudly for help, and it could only have been a few minutes before the search began for the victim, whose body was recovered within 20 minutes at most. For a good hour Doctors Powell, Reynolds and Chapman tried to restore the seemingly extingished spark of life -- but all for nought. Donald's spirit had returned to Him, who had given it.
The remains were laid to rest Friday morning after a funeral service held by Pastor S. W. Slagle, from the former home to the chapel crypt.
