Margarethe Schmunk, wife of Mr. Peter Schmunk, died on Sunday morning in her farm home near Antwerp, Paulding County, at the age of approximately 72 years. Just about a year ago she became ill with a stomach complaint that finally developed into incurable cancer and sporadically caused her great pain, which she bore with Christlike resignation and with patience. She had lived with her family here in Defiance for many years, until about 10 years ago she moved with her husband to the farm in Paulding County. Besides her widower she is survived by the daughter Mrs. August Kalk and the son John in Paulding County, the son Peter in the parental residence, the son Louis from here and the son Philipp in Colton, Ohio. Thomas Rourke
Thomas Rourke died on Thursday morning in Defiance Hospital, where he had been operated on the prior Monday for gallstones. He had been indisposed for a few weeks, but his pain had only reached a critical stage on Friday before the operation. The operation immediately showed that the liver and stomach of the patient were also involved and so there was slim chance of recovery. His situation was no secret to the patient, but he was counting on improvement and felt still on Wednesday that he would recover again. But already on the next morning about 4 o'clock he passed away.
Thomas Rourke was born here on the 13th of October 1859 and had lived here ever since. He was an iron-foundryman by trade and had worked many years in the Defiance Machineworks. For eight years he had served as constable, two years under W. J. Rath as deputy sheriff and at his death he was assistant to Sheriff Buchholz. It would be difficult to find a man in Defiance who had more friends and to whom less criticism would be directed. Surviving are his widowed mother and the three sisters Mrs. Mary Gottwald in Chicago and the Misses Anna and Catherine Rourke of here. He had never married and had made his home with his mother and the two unmarried sisters, who live at No. 657 Jackson Street. His brother Michael died years ago, while he had occupied the position of deputy sheriff under J. A. Foust.
The burial took place Saturday morning from the St. Mary's Church. The local branch of the Knights of Columbus gave their deceased brother an escort to the grave.
