Kilian Hohenberger, one of the first German pioneers of the South-Ridge, passed away quietly in his sleep on the previous Wednesday morning here in the residence of his daughter Mrs. Louise Cocayne, No. 400 Seneca Street. Born on the 10th of July 1827 in Hof in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, he enjoyed in his youth a Christian upbringing. At the age of 21 years in the year 1848 in Hof he married Miss Wilhelmine Herold. In that same year he immigrated to this country with his wife and his parents and took up residence in South Richland, where he worked a farm until the year 1891, and through industry, plain dealing and frugality brought it to such a state of prosperity, to give the promise of a care-free old age. In the year 1891 he moved with his wife to Defiance to his daughter Mrs. Louise Cocayne, where he, until his tired eyes closed in death, received the best care and attention. His wife preceded him in death on the 7th of June 1894. The elder, who up until the last few years had enjoyed great good health and had remained in possession of his mental faculties until the end of his earthly pilgrimage, had brought his age to 91 years, 8 months and 16 days. Left behind are the sons Michael, Friedrich and Christian Hohenberger on the South-Ridge, as well as the daughters Mrs. Christine Stoll in Toledo, Mrs. Hanna Cavanaugh and Mrs. Louise Cocayne in Defiance and Mrs. Elisabeth Alltop in Toledo. Also left behind are 32 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
