Wilhelm Spengler, for nineteen years a resident of the city of Defiance, died from a heart ailment on Friday evening in the Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, where he had been admitted about a month ago. He was born on the 12th of November 1856 in Werballin bei Neustadt, Eberswalde, Prussia, and immigrated in the year 1865 with his parents Johann Wilhelm Spengler and Auguste Spengler, born Torga. The family resided for one year in Defiance and then settled in Florida, where they resided for sixteen years. From there they moved their residence to Napoleon, and there the now deceased successfully acted as a merchant for twenty years. In the last years he has mostly supervised the work on his properties and resided here in his fine residence on the northwest corner of Hopkins and Washington Streets. Surviving him is the sister Mrs. Auguste Carmen of here, as well as the sister Mrs. Maria Jaqua and the brothers Ernst and Hermann Spengler in Napoleon.
His mortal remains were taken Saturday evening to Napoleon to the residence of his brother Ernst Spengler, and on Monday afternoon buried from the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor F. J. Lankenau officiated. Wilhelm Spengler had brought his lifetime to 59 years, 4 months and 8 days.

Martin B. Gorman
Martin B. Gorman, by the time of his abidance here one of the oldest citizens of our city, on Sunday morning about 1 o'clock in his residence on Jackson Street, died after an only few day illness, from a heart condition. He was born in Ireland on the 2nd of November 1845 and came as a one year old infant with his parents to this country and after a short sojourn in Hamilton, Ohio came in 1848 to Defiance, where he, when orphaned, was raised in the family of Mr. J. B. Weisenburger. As a youth of 16 years he went to the Civil War and gave the Union three years of faithful service. After the war he spent a short while in the west and then returned permanently to Defiance. On the 24th of February 1868 he married Miss Katharine Zook, who with the following children survives: Misses Martine, Viola and Mildred Gorman in the parental residence, Mrs. W. C. Palmer in Flint, Mich., Mrs. Fred Mangas in Toledo, Mrs. Ben. Elliot, Frank and Earl Gorman of here and Thomas Gorman in Toledo. Martin B. Gorman was a good and respected citizen. He belonged many times to the school Board and was also city secretary for some years. At his passing he was the highest officer of the Knights of Columbus and member of the Bishop Post of the Grand Army. For many years he had successfully run a store on Perry Street dealing in groceries, lime, cement, etc.
The burial of his remains took place Tuesday morning from the St. Mary's Catholic Church under the direction of Father G. A. Brannigan to the Riverside Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus and his comrades (from the Grand Army accompanied him to the grave). (truncated, extrapolated).

Leo M. Arens
Leo M. Arens, unmarried and a son of the widow Margarethe Arens, died on Thursday evening about half past ten in the family residence No. 1016 Francis Street after about a two week illness at the age of 20 years, 11 months and 7 days. He was an industrious young man and had worked lately in the plant of the Defiance Pressed Steel Co. Surviving are the bowed down with grief mother, the three sisters Mrs. Perry Killion, Miss Klara and Miss Margarethe Arens, as well as the four brothers Frank, Henry, Joseph and John Arens. All the siblings reside in Defiance except for John Arens who resides in Auburn, Ind. The deceased belonged to the Musicians Federation and the Regimental choir. His remains were buried Monday morning in the Riverside Cemetery after a funeral Mass was held by Father J. B. Alten in the St. John's Catholic Church. The regimental choir gave their beloved comrade an honor guard to the grave. Pallbearers were Carl Stein, John Weber, Andreas Hetz, Victor Höffel, Ambrose Imber and Frank Weber. The beautiful flower arrangements were carried by Joseph Krutsch, Thomas Imber, Will Nolan and Louis Krutsch.

Mrs. Anna Bogert
Mrs. Anna Bogert, a born Krause, died on Thursday evening shortly before 10 o'clock in the State Hospital in Toledo at the age of approximately 37 years. She became mentally ill about a year and a half ago and since then has been on and off an inmate of the aforementioned asylum, constantly since mid-summer and without the outlook of a cure. On the report of her precarious condition, her father Johan Krause, residing here, and his daughter Mrs. Mary Klein hurried to Toledo on Thursday morning and made a visit to the patient. She well recognized her visitors, but because of her great weakness was only able to converse with them a little. She leaves behind her husband living in Toledo, August C. Bogert, the stepdaughter Ernaline, the father Johann Krause and the sister Mrs. Mary Klein of here, as well as the sister Mrs. Bertha Winter in Saginaw, Michigan. The mother and many siblings have preceded her in death.
The remains were brought hither Saturday morning on the Wabash Railroad to the residence of the father on Ottawa Avenue and in the afternoon interred in the Riverside Cemetery, after Pastor L. H. Ziemer had held a funeral service at half past 1 in the residence and at 2 o'clock in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The pallbearers were Ray March, Karl Harmening, Georg P. Wohn, Peter F. Seibel, Julius Spengler and Wilhelm Hanker.
