Johann Hermann Benien
Johann Hermann Benien, one of the best known and respected citizens of the area near Okolona, passed on Thursday morning about one o'clock after a lengthy illness from this life. He was born on the 22nd of January 1842 at Jeddingen bei Visselhövede as the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Benien. At Easter 1856 he was confirmed by Pastor Wyneken in the Church at Visselhövede and in the year 1860 wanted to enter the teachers' seminary at Stade, when his parents immigrated to America and settled in Napoleon. The first 15 years the young Benien spent as a teacher in the public and parochial schools and worked during the summer on the farm or in a store. On the 11th of May 1868 he tied the knot (closed the bond for life) with Miss Katharine Maria Scheele. The wedding was solemnized by the late Pastor K. Strauss and the marriage was blessed with eleven children, of whom three have gone ahead into Eternity. In the year 1870 he founded in Okolona a shop, served for many years as a station agent and postmaster, later erected an elevator and acquired the neighboring farm. About the year 1898 he retired from the active business life, but at the founding of the German Fire insurance company he was the first secretary and treasurer and a few years ago served again as its secretary. To this newspaper, to which he gave faithful service for years as a correspondent, and to its publisher he was a dear friend, for whom we wish from the Lord release from the yoke of oppressive time and the Eternal Rest.
Left behind are the deeply sorrowing spouse, six sons, two daughters and ten grandchildren, among them Mrs. Friedrich Röhrs in Noble township. The burial took place Saturday afternoon from the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church near Okolona under the direction of Pastor H. Klöckner.
