Mrs. Louise Hemlein, wife of Frank J. Hemlein, died last Wednesday afternoon about 5 o'clock in her residence 844 Francis Street after a lengthy illness at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 6 days. She hailed from the state of Pennsylvania and came 25 years ago with her husband to Defiance, where she has resided ever since. Surviving her are the widower, the son Charles H. Hemlein and the three daughters Margaret, Clara and Louise Hemlein. The burial took place Friday afternoon from the former residence and the Zion English Lutheran Church to the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor W. H. Shepser officiated.
Andrew Jackson Sanford, one of the pioneers of Defiance County, died shortly after twelve o'clock on Saturday in his residence at 915 Ottawa Avenue from the infirmities of age. He had lived the greater part of his life on a farm in Highland township, where his father had settled as one of the first settlers. During the Civil War he served in Co. B of the 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and Co. F of the 169th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, He was (for) three years commissioner of Defiance county, and until a short time ago was a rural mail carrier. He had brought his age to almost 75 years. surviving him are the widow with a few grown children.
His remains were buried Monday afternoon under the direction of Pastor W. C. Demuth from the Church of the United Brethren to the Riverside Cemetery. Comrades from the Grand Army accompanied him to the grave.

Martha McFadden
Martha McFadden died on Monday morning about 8 o'clock in the residence of William A. Anderson on the upper Francis Street from the infirmities of age at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 7 days. Her remains were buried Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the former residence under the direction of Pastor Hartley to the Riverside Cemetery.
Caroline Lero, the almost 15 year old daughter of the married couple Michael and Mary Lero in Noble Township, died on Tuesday morning about 8 o'clock in the Defiance Hospital, where on Monday of the preceding week she had been operated upon for appendicitis, apparently successfully. After the operation unforeseen complications cropped up, which led to death. Remaining behind are the parents, six brothers and 2 sisters. The burial will take place Thursday morning at 9 o'clock under the direction of Father Hensbach from the Catholic Church in Marysdale (Mud creek) to the graveyard there.
Mrs. John Davison, who with her husband resided for many years in Adams Township and from there moved to Napoleon, died on Friday in Battle creek, Mich. she was 70 years old and leaves behind the widower and a number of grown children. Her remains were brought hither Sunday afternoon and after a short ceremony, which took place in the cemetery chapel, were buried in the Riverside Cemetery.

Henry J. Jennings
Henry J. Jennings died on last Friday afternoon in his residence in Cleveland at the age of 41 years, 6 months and 16 days. His wife was on a visit here with her two children and on Friday at the news of his severe illness rushed home on the 11:30 (train), but found on her arrival in Cleveland her husband already a corpse. Up until six years ago the deceased resided in Defiance and lastly had here an apothecary shop; he practiced this occupation also in Cleveland. He served two terms as city treasurer of Defiance. surviving him are the wife Carrie, a born Spangler, with the two children Isabel and Robert; the mother Mrs. John Flanagan of here and the sister Mrs. Henry M. Kuhn in Peru, Indiana.
His remains were brought to Defiance Saturday night to the residence of (his) mother and on Monday morning buried from the St. Mary's Catholic Church under the direction of Father James A. Lane in the Riverside Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus and the Elks, to which he belonged, gave him a funeral cortege.
Helen Mary Haviland, two day old infant of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Haviland died on Wednesday morning and on Thursday afternoon was buried from the family residence to the Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Pastor W. C. Demuth.

Samuel Smith
Samuel Smith, a long-time resident of Highland Township, died on Sunday evening about half past six o clock in Ayersville in the residence of his daughter Mrs. Sarah Imhoff. He was born on the 10th of May 1834 in Stark County, Ohio and thus had brought his age to 81 years, 8 months and 12 days. Surviving him are the following children: Calvin Smith and Mrs. Sarah Imhoff in Ayersville, Mrs. A. M. Shaw and Mrs. Henry Siegfried in Ithaca, Mich., and Mrs. Benjamin Wellman in Highland Township. His wife preceded him in death. The burial took place Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist Church in Ayersville to the Hill Cemetery. Pastor W. S. Tracy from Defiance officiated.
