Winfield Scott Smith, who came from Hancock county in our state, but settled many years ago with his parents in Highland Township, died on Thursday evening at almost 6 o'clock in his residence in that township, age 53 years, 11 months and 22 days. He leaves behind the widow with a few children. The burial took place Sunday morning in the Hill Cemetery, after a funeral service had been held at 10 o'clock in the Mt. Calvary Church. Pastor Tracy officiated and the pallbearers were taken from the ranks of the Gleaners.

John R. Keller
John R. Keller, a resident of Defiance Township for many years, died suddenly Sunday morning in the residence of his neighbor, John McCollister, to whom he was paying a visit, apparently from a heart attack. He was born in the state of Pennsylvania and had on the 11th of January of this year celebrated his 76th birthday. Left behind are the widow and the three sons, Theodor, George and John, as well as the daughter, Mrs. Charles Sproull, all of whom are resident in the countryside south of here. His remains were buried Tuesday afternoon in the Taylor Cemetery after a funeral service had been held at 1 o'clock in the former residence and at 2 o'clock in the Oakland Church.

John Egler
John Egler, a resident of Defiance county for many years and a citizen generally held in respect, died on Thursday morning about 3 o'clock in the residence of his only daughter, Mrs. Charles Overly in North Richland. He was born on the 1st of May 1842 in this state, and has therefore reached the age of 73 years, 5 months and 6 days. Besides the daughter already mentioned, surviving him are the three sons, John, Henry and Fred. Egler. His wife preceded him in death just a few years ago. His remains were buried Saturday afternoon after a funeral service in the former residence and the Church in Independence, [with burial] in the Independence Cemetery. Pastor W. H. Shepser officiated. Members of the National Union gave their deceased brother a funeral cortege and also served as coffin-bearers.

Mrs. Electa Skiver, wife of Clayton E. Skiver and a born Sanford, died on last Wednesday in the family residence on East Street at the age of 28 years. She leaves behind the widower and six children. Her remains were buried Friday afternoon from the Baptist Church in the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor D. E. Miller officiated.

Mrs. Karoline Schmitt
Mrs. Karoline Schmitt, daughter of the married couple Franz and Susanna Hasselbarth and widow of Jakob Schmitt, died on Wednesday morning shortly after 9 o'clock in her residence in Tiffin Township after a lengthy illness from a heart complaint. She was born in Noble Township on the 16th of February 1869 and in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church here baptized and confirmed. On the 18th of January 1898 she married Jakob Schmitt, who in the fall of the year 1904 preceded her in death. Surviving her are the children Hulda, Hugo, Hermann and Adolf, all still minors, who are now completely orphaned. Also left behind are the aged mother, one brother and seven sisters. Her earthly pilgrimage, which was overly full of sorrow and cares, she had brought to 47 years and 14 days. The burial took place Saturday afternoon from the former residence to the Webb Cemetery under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess.

Mrs. Margaret Murphy
Mrs. Margaret Murphy, widow of Peter W. Murphy, who died many years ago, died on Saturday morning in Garrett, Ind., in the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Cogley, from pneumonia. She was about 70 years old and leaves behind the two daughters, Mrs. Cogley and Mrs. Dils and the son, Guy Murphy. Her remains were brought hither Monday afternoon to the residence of her granddaughter, Mrs. Frank A. Wilsberg, No. 702 Perry Street and on Tuesday morning under the direction of Father James A. Lane from the St. Mary's Catholic Church to burial in the Riverside Cemetery. The pallbearers were P. A. Baker, Frank Lannon, A. J. Wolsiffer, A. J. Mangas, John Murphy and John E. Nolan.

Emily Reynolds
Emily Reynolds, daughter of Dr. J. J. Reynolds and his wife, died on Friday morning about half past four in the parental residence on Wayne Avenue after a lengthy siege from consumption. She was born here on the 15th of September 1893 and in the year 1911 graduated from the local high school, and then practiced music, at which she excelled. Left behind are the parents and the brother Bruce Reynolds in Lexington, Kentucky. The burial of her mortal remains took place Monday afternoon from the family residence to the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor E. D. Crist officiated.
