Peter Kettenring
Peter Kettenring, one of the pioneers of our city and one of its most prominent men, died on Wednesday evening about seven o'clock in his residence on Perry Avenue at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 2 days. Born in the Rhein-Palatinate, Germany, he came to this country as a three month old child and as an eight year old boy to Defiance, where he has lived ever since and valiantly contributed to the development of our city. He was the founder of the Defiance Machine Works, our most important factory, and was until his passing its president. He was also for many years the president of the state Bank and from the founding of the Security Building and Loan company, its president.
The active leadership of the Defiance Machine Works Mr. Kettenring turned over to his three sons thirty years ago, but even still took a lively interest in the progress and prosperity of the concern. His spouse Frances, a born Kahlo, on the 25th of October 1916 after an almost sixty year marriage preceded Mr. Kettenring in death. Of the eight children resulting from this marriage, surviving the parents are the sons Ransom P. and Charles H. Kettenring of here, as well as the daughters Mrs. C. C. Hoffman of here and Mrs. Nellie Ansberry in Washington, D.C. The burial of the mortal remains of the universally respected pioneer took place on last Friday afternoon from the St. Paul's Methodist Church under the auspices of the local commandery of the Knights Templar and the Toledo Lodge of the Scottish Rite Free Masons in the Riverside Cemetery. Dr. A. E. Smith from Ada, Ohio, as an old friend and former pastor, Dr. E. O. Crist as pastor of his congregation and Judge F. L. Hay in the name of the commandery of the Knights Templar gave the deceased stirring eulogies. During the funeral all business places in Defiance were closed.
