Friedrich Hanker died last Saturday morning about 1 o'clock in his residence No. 824 Francis Street after a many week illness from a complicated condition. He was born on the 25th of June 1835 in Regenslage, Osterburg County of the Saxon province of Prussia, there baptized into the Lutheran Church and on Palm Sunday 1848, confirmed. At the customary age for service, he entered the military and served his full time. On the 24th of January 1863 he entered into matrimony with Miss Sophia Kappe and nine years later immigrated to this country with her and the three surviving of the five children born in the meantime. After barely one year stops in New York and Michigan, in February 1873 he settled in Defiance, where he remained resident until his end. In the year 1881 he was struck by a disaster, as three of his children were taken by death. On the 27th of December 1886 his faithful wife died, who had given him seven children. Of these, two in Germany and four in this country, died. The only remaining child is the son Wilhelm, residing here. Also left behind are the wife from the second marriage, which he entered into in March 1889 with the widow Barbara Young, five grandchildren, one sister and one brother in Germany.
The deceased was a simple, industrious man and as true as pure gold. He has been since his arrival in Defiance a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran congregation and a great friend of the German language and local school. His mortal remains were buried Monday afternoon in the Riverside Cemetery, after Pastor F.A. Kiess had held a funeral service at half past one in the former residence and at 2 o'clock in the Church. Friedrich Hanker had brought his lifetime to 78 years, 6 months and 15 days. The pallbearers were Heinrich Hohenberger, Wilhelm Pracht, Friedrich Schäufele, Christ. Dürk, Wilhelm Franzdorf and Nikolaus Böhm.

Otto Edwin Kammeyer
Otto Edwin Kammeyer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich Kammeyer in Tiffin Township, died Saturday about noon in Defiance Hospital. The boy took sick the week before last, and when the doctors with certainty could give a diagnosis of appendicitis, Doctors Smith from Toledo, Powell from Defiance and Collins from Evansport on Friday morning in Defiance Hospital undertook an operation, by which it was shown that the illness had already reached a very dangerous stage. As much as the doctors offered the hope, that the boy's strong constitution would help him to get past the danger, death occurred already on the following day.
