Heinrich J. Meyer on Monday evening of the previous week in his residence in Adams Township was taken from this time by death. On Sunday evening two weeks ago he became ill, after he had felt well the entire day, shortly after going to bed and so severely that at first ptomaine poisoning was feared. Later it appeared that the patient suffered from influenza (grippe) and blood poisoning, which all the medical arts failed and eventually led to death.
Heinrich J. Meyer was born on the 18th of September 1857 as the son of the late J. F. Christoph Meyer and his wife Sophia. He received as a child Holy Baptism and was, after the usual instruction in the teachings of the Lutheran Church, confirmed at the customary age. On the 4th of November 1886 he was wed with Dore Bremer, who with the following, still residing in the parental home children: Heinrich, Georg, Sophia, Edwin and Martin. Also surviving are the three brothers, Johann Meyer near Deshler, Friedrich C. Meyer in Liberty Township and Christ. W. Meyer in Deshler.
The now deceased possessed a nice farm and a stately residence, furnished with all the comforts, and was able more and more to think about retiring from strenuous activity. Then unexpectedly the unconquerable Death struck the apparently healthy man and made all his earthly plans to naught. Many friends mourn with the family his passing away.
The burial took place on Saturday morning in the graveyard of the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Adams Township. The funeral service was at 10 o'clock in the home and at 11 o'clock in the St. Mark's Church under the direction of Pastor H. Schult. Heinrich J. Meyer had brought his lifetime to 56 years and 6 months.

Mrs. Susanna M. Louys
Mrs. Susanna M. Louys, wife of Lucien H. Louys, on Saturday evening after a short illness in the family residence No. 209 East Third Street, died from jaundice and other complications. She was 58 years, 11 months and 8 days old and leaves behind the widower, as well as the two daughters Miss Hazel B. Louys and Miss Leah Louys. The interment of the mortal remains took place Tuesday afternoon from the English Methodist Church to the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor P.A. crow officiated. The members of the "Ladies Relief & Benefit Society" gave their deceased sister a funeral cortege.
Edward Payson Hooker, one of the few surviving pioneers of the city of Defiance, on Friday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock in his residence No. 667 Jefferson street died from inflammation of the windpipe.
Born on the 1st of September 1832 in Auburn, N.Y., he moved as a seven year old boy with his parents to Rockton, Ill., where he remained until the 20th year of his life. In between he attended the public schools of his home state and a higher school in Beloit, Wisconsin. From 1852 until 1859 he worked in Chicago in the Engros ?Drug and Spice-ware stores. In the spring of 1859 he founded in Defiance under the firm name of Backus, Lindenberger and Hooker a "General Store", in which he was active for five years. Up until the year 1870 he then lived in Milwaukee and there ran a factorage with grain, meal, seeds, etc. From there he returned to Defiance and remained resident here until his death. Up into a great age he worked at various occupations; at first as an industrialist, in the last years he was a member (stood for) the in connection with the Merchants' National Bank. He had gone from assistant cashier, cashier and vice-president, and at the time of his passing was a member of the board of directors of the aforementioned bank.
On the 27th of September 1860 he married Arabella E. Holgate, who gave him two sons and two daughters. The wife, the sons William H. and Edward Bernard and the daughter Fannie Annette preceded him in death. surviving him are only the daughter Mrs. Minnie Ferguson in Flint, Mich., with two grandchildren. He had enjoyed good health, until a few years ago through a fall from a tree suffered a spinal injury. His mental powers remained with him until his last breath. He had brought his age to 81 years, 6 months and 13 days.
Edward Payson Hooker was an upright man and an exemplary citizen, honorable and righteous. May his life serve as an example to be imitated by the younger generation! His mortal remains were buried Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church to the Holgate family mausoleum. Dr. S. W. Slagle and Pastor C. E. Shields officiated. Pallbearers were the Mr's A. K. Harold, W. G. Lehman, Holgate Harley, W. C. Holgate, F. S. Stever and P. W. McReynolds.
