August Kehnast, a many-year resident of Defiance County, died last Saturday afternoon in the residence of his son John Kehnast in Noble township after a lengthy illness from the infirmities of age. Born on the 26th of July 1836 in Möhrenbach, Thuringia, Germany, he came in 1854 as an 18 year old youth to this country and resided at first in Tonawanda, New York. In the year 1861 he settled in Florida, Ohio, and on the 10th of October of the same year, joined Co. F of the 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the honorable war, in which he gave faithful service to his adopted Fatherland until his honorable discharge in 1865. Then he settled on a farm in this area, and after many years went into retirement in Brunersburg. There his wife died in the year 1906, and from then on he made his home with his children. Surviving him are the two sons Wilhelm, Jr. and John in Noble Township, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. the brother Wm. A. Kehnast of here, as well as the brother Richard and the sister Adelhaide in Möhrenbach, Germany. He had brought his lifetime to 78 years, 2 months and 7 days.
His mortal remains were taken from the former residence Monday afternoon under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess to the grave in the Brunersburg Cemetery. Comrades from the Grand Army gave him a funeral cortege.

Mrs. Elisabeth Mettler
Mrs. Elisabeth Mettler, widow of the late Emanuel Mettler, on Thursday evening of the previous week at half past six o'clock in the family residence No. 835 Kintner Street, after a lengthy illness was taken from this time through a quiet death.
She was born on the 25th of December 1844 in Neuhausen in the Canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. Her younger years and the first years of her happy marriage with Emanuel Mettler she spent in the old Fatherland. In the year 1882 the Mettler family immigrated to this country and settled in Defiance, where they have remained resident ever since. About a year ago Mrs. Mettler began to sicken but the family had no idea of the nearness of the danger of death. On Thursday the patient felt passably well, but shortly after six o'clock in the evening she became seriously ill and half an hour later the life of the elderly lady had flown.
Surviving the deceased, who was held in highest esteem by all her acquaintances, are the two daughters Miss Lydia Mettler and Mrs. William C. Holgate of here. The daughter Miss Lena died in 1901, the son Paul in 1905 and the husband Emanuel Mettler in 1907. The burial took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence to the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor C. W. Helwig of the German Methodist Episcopal congregation officiated.

Anna Maria Sigg
Anna Maria Sigg, born Schneider and widow of the late Friedrich Sigg, died on the 18th of June in the residence of her daughter Mrs. Wilhelm Kutzli in Archbold at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 8 days. She was born on the 10th of May 1841 in Dörflingen in the Swiss Canton of Schaffhausen and was there also baptized, confirmed and on the 24th of October 1861 wed to Friedrich Sigg. In December 1880 she came with her family to America and settled in Defiance County. With advancing age, the Sigg couple moved eleven years ago to Archbold to their daughter Mrs. Wilhelm Kutzli. There on the 26th of September 1909 her husband preceded her into eternity. Up until one year ago she enjoyed good health, then a heart problem befell her, which put an end to her earthly life. She had long been ready for the journey home and awaited faithfully the time when she should enter into the vision. Of nine children, to whom she gave life, three sons and two daughters died before her. surviving her are one son (Alfred Sigg in Tiffin Township), three daughters, 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The burial took place in the Archbold graveyard, after Pastor Vogt had held a funeral service at 9 o'clock in the former residence and at 10 o'clock in the Reformed Church.

Elisabeth Harris
Elisabeth Harris, a born Ashton and widow of Thomas D. Harris, who belonged among the pioneers of the city of Defiance, died on Monday evening in the residence of her son Kenneth Harris in Highland Township from the infirmities of age. She had brought her age to almost 82 years. surviving her are three sons, among them the attorney Henry B. Harris residing here, and three daughters. The Christian burial of the mortal remains will take place Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the former residence to the Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Gottwald
Mrs. Mary Gottwald, wife of John Gottwald in Chicago, died here last Wednesday morning about seven o'clock in the residence of her sisters Catherine and Anna Rourke on Jackson Street after an illness of many months. She had resided the past eight years in Chicago. At the start of the previous week, she mentioned her desire to be able to return once again to her old home Defiance. This wish was answered. On Tuesday night the patient arrived here and on the following morning passed away peacefully in her sleep. Surviving her are the husband, the sons Norbert in Chicago, Donald, Thomas and Arthur in Defiance, and the two aforementioned sisters. She had brought her age to 48 years, 1 month and 17 days. Her mortal remains were buried Friday morning from the St. Mary's Church to the Riverside Cemetery. Father Brannigan officiated.
