Matthäus Eberle, one of the oldest German settlers of the South Ridge died in his sleep Monday morning of this week here in the residence of his daughter Karoline Ruess, No. 919 Jefferson Street, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Gross Ingersheim, Württemberg on the 8th of May 1827, and thus was 86 years, 4 months and 9 days old. He spent his younger years in the old Fatherland. There on the 9th of July 1850 he married Miss Friederike Roth, with whom he came to America in the year 1854, and after a short stop in Cleveland, O., settled on the South Ridge. In the year 1907 the Eberle couple came to Defiance and remained here most of the time residing with their children. The wife died on the 8th of August 1908. Of the six children, whom they gave life, one has died; the remaining children are Gottlieb Eberle in Highland, John M. Eberle, Mrs. Kathe Chubb, Mrs. Christine Obermüller and Mrs Karoline Ruess in Defiance. Besides these there are 24 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday morning at 9 o'clock here in the former residence under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess and at 10 o'clock in the St. Stephan's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Highland Township under the direction of Pastor C. Schröder with burial in the congregation's cemetery.
Martin Fronk, one of the oldest inhabitants of Adams Township and a man,who met all with respect and courtesy , died last Thursday afternoon about three o'clock after a lengthy illness from a form of cancer, for which cure all known means had been tried in vain. He was born on the 11th of November 1844 in the countryside near Horshoftin, Pilsen county, Bohemia, and as an eight year old boy came with his parents and siblings to this country. At first they resided in Seneca County of this state, but in about the year 1860 they settled in Adams Township, where the deceased remained resident to the end of his life. From the long ago marriage to Minnie Ramus resulted twelve children, of whom eight preceded their father into Eternity. Left behind with the widow are the sons Alphons and Julius, as well as the daughters Stella and Rosa. Also surviving the departed are the brothers Albert and George Fronk in Adams Township and the sister widow (of) Peter Coressel in Defiance. His mortal remains .... (truncated)

Johanna Olson
Johanna Olson, wife of Edward Olson and of Swedish birth, died Friday in her residence on the Hicksville Pike, about six miles west of Defiance. She was 76 years old and leaves behind the widower, one son, one daughter and two grandchildren. Her remains were buried Monday afternoon from the former residence under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess in the Riverside cemetery.

Wilhelm Gottlieb Rahmel
Wilhelm Gottlieb Rahmel, a son of the widow Christine Rahmel, died on Saturday morning in Defiance Hospital, where he had been admitted just in the middle of the previous week, from nerve fever (?typhoid). On the 24th of September of the current year he was 21 years old. With the mother, who just on Thursday had to follow the coffin of her eldest son Friedrich to the grave, mourning the death of the youth are the siblings Mrs. Auguste Memmer, Karl, Hermann, Minna and Emilie Rahmel. The burial took place Tuesday morning from the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church to the Riverside cemetery. Pastor F. A. Kiess officiated.

Peter B. Ziegler
Peter B. Ziegler, who had spent his youth in Defiance and resided lately in Muskogee, Oklahoma, died there suddenly on Wednesday evening of the previous week at the age of 40 years. His wife, a born Schaner from Napoleon, survives him with two daughters. Also left behind are the two sisters Mrs. Peter Shannon and Miss Sophia Ziegler of here and the brother Ed. Ziegler in Shelby, Ohio. Mr. Johann Altschuh of here is an uncle of the deceased.
The remains were brought to Defiance Friday evening to the residence of Mrs. Peter Shannon and Saturday morning were buried from the St. Mary's Catholic Church in the Riverside cemetery.

Joseph Pickering
Joseph Pickering died on Thursday evening of the previous week shortly after 9 o'clock in his residence No. 915 West High Street after a short illness from pneumonia. He had worked for many years in the Defiance Machineworks and enjoyed there the high regard of both his supervisors and his fellow workers. Left behind are his widow and ten children -- five boys and five girls. The deceased belonged to the support society of the Defiance Machineworks and the Maccabees lodge. He had brought his age to 56 years, 2 months and 21 days. His remains were taken Sunday afternoon to the grave in the Riverside cemetery, after Pastor W. F. Barber had held a funeral service in the former residence and in the Church of the United Brethren on East Hopkins Street. The workers of the Defiance Machineworks gave there deceased colleague an honor guard to the grave.
