Lewis Jaynes, a veteran of the Civil War, died on Saturday evening in his residence No. 1054 Ayersville Avenue after a lengthy illness at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 3 days. He was born on the 10th of October 1843 in Athens, Ohio, as the son of Richard and Nancy Jaynes and came in the year 1852 to Defiance where he remained resident until the end of his life. He served in the Civil War as a member of company D of the 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, to which he belonged from the 18th of October 1861 until the 10th of July 1865. Surviving him are the widow, a born Lewis, with whom he entered into matrimony on the 1st of October 1855, and the following children: William Jaynes in Arthur, Ala., John Jaynes of here, Mrs. Earl Spangler in Toledo, and Anna Jaynes in Defiance. Mrs. Jacob Colwell of here is his stepdaughter. Additionally remaining behind are 7 grandchildren and two brothers, who reside in Henry County. The burial took place Monday afternoon from the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Pastor F. A. Kiess. The deceased's comrades from the Grand Army accompanied him to the grave.

John Schneider
John Schneider, one of the oldest building contractors of our city, died on Thursday morning about 2 o'clock in his residence No. 912 Holgate Avenue from a kidney disease, which had befallen him just the evening before. Born on the 23rd of May 1842 in the Elsass, he came to this country in 1851 and resided first in Lafayette, Indiana. Since 1866 he had lived in Defiance and occupied himself especially with road and bridge construction. He had given his fellow citizens faithful service a few times in the city council. Surviving him is the widow from the second marriage -- his first spouse, a born Seibert, died in 1883 -- and the following children: Mary M. Schneider in Washington, D.C., Agnes Schneider and Mrs. Stella V. Haines in Pasadena, Cal., Mrs. Helen L. Johnson in Chicago, Octavia Schneider, Frank, John and Edward Schneider of here. His remains were buried Saturday morning under the direction of Father L. Plumann from the St. John's catholic Church in the Riverside Cemetery.
Acting as pallbearers were Christ. Winterich, F. J. Wagner, A. J. Wolsiffer, E. W. Costello, August D. Meyer and Dan. W. Coy.

Donald Burke
Donald Burke, little son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Burke, died on the previous Wednesday evening in the parental residence in Tiffin Township at the age of 2 years, 1 month and 16 days. The burial took place Friday afternoon from the former residence in the Riverside Cemetery.

Tobias Hehr
Tobias Hehr died on Thursday morning about half past 4 o'clock in the residence of his stepson William Seeger, No. 203 East Street, at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 24 days. Although he had already been ill for a very long time, his end was completely unexpected. Tobias Hehr hailed from Germany, came young to this country and resided in Defiance for many years. Besides the aforementioned stepson he leaves behind the four stepdaughters residing here: Mrs. Frank Myers, Mrs. Albert Dusaberg, Mrs. Charles Rulf and Miss Lucy Seeger. His spouse preceded him in death on the 7th of January 1917. His mortal remains were taken to the grave on Saturday afternoon from the former residence under the direction of Pastor H. Folsch in the Riverside Cemetery.
