Mrs. Elisabeth Bauer, a born Umbs and widow of the late Alwin Bauer, on Sunday evening about 8 o'clock in the residence of her daughter Mrs. Paul Wyrsch, 727 Holgate Avenue, after a short illness from pneumonia, was released from this time of woe by an easy death. She was born on the 2nd of December 1835 at Heddesheim bei Kreuznach, Prussia, and thus was 80 years, 2 months and 25 days old. In the year 1854 she immigrated and settled in Defiance, where she spent the remainder of her pilgrimage here below. She married Mr. Alwin Bauer in the year 1858 and on the 15th of November 1892 this marriage was broken by the death of her spouse. The elderly lady now gone to her rest, who was held in high regard by a large circle of friends here, left behind the following children: Mrs. Paul Wyrsch, Joseph Bauer, Michael Bauer and Mrs. John E. Nolan of here, Mrs. Joseph Schmucker in Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Michael Ullrich in Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. August Schmucker in London, England. Additionally her descendancy includes 38 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Lensker, preceded her mother in death in the year 1896.
Grandmother Bauer belonged to the society of Christian Mothers of the St. John's Catholic congregation and the German Women's Sickness Support Society. She was the oldest member of the latter society. Her mortal remains were buried Wednesday morning with large attendance under the direction of Father L. Plumann from the St. John's Catholic Church in the Riverside Cemetery. Both societies, to which Grandmother Bauer had belonged, gave her a cortege at the burial.

John F. Hess
John F. Hess died on Sunday evening in his residence No. 863 Jefferson Street at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 11 days from pneumonia. He was an old resident of our city and crippled for years, such that he had to get around on a cart. He was a war veteran and had served in the Civil War as a member of Co. E. of the 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His remains were taken Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock from the St. Mary's Catholic Church to the grave in the Riverside Cemetery. Father J. A. Lane officiated at the burial. The Bishop Post of the Grand Army provided a funeral cortege for the deceased comrade. Left behind are the sisters Mrs. R. J. McBroom, Mrs. Joseph Blanchard, Mrs. John Moran and Mrs. Fannie St. Amant and the brother George W. Hess in Humboldt, Nebr. The spouse preceded the deceased in death in February of 1908.
Benjamin Taylor, one of the oldest inhabitants of this landscape, died Wednesday afternoon of the previous week in his residence two miles east of Jewell, from the infirmities of age. He was born in champaign county in our state on the 30th of November 1831 and thus had reached the age of 84 years, 2 months and 2 days. Surviving him are the sons chase Taylor near Jewell and Horace Taylor in Ney, as well as the daughters Nellie, Grace and Amanda. The deceased came in the year 1845 with his parents to this area and had resided here ever since. His mortal remains were buried Friday morning from the Methodist Church in Florida in the Riverside Cemetery, and under the direction of Pastor Pierce.

Calvin R. Andrews
Calvin R. Andrews died on Friday morning in his residence No. 623 Francis Street after an illness of only a few hours from a heart complaint. He had just the evening before attended a meeting of the Turnbull Support society. He was born 62 years ago in Florida, Ohio and had resided for the past twenty years in Defiance. Left behind are the widow, the daughters Misses Besse and Myrtle, the son Clarence, two brothers and one sister. The burial took place Sunday afternoon under the direction of Pastor C. E. Shields from the former residence in the Riverside Cemetery. Attending the funeral service were also many friends of the deceased from the south Ridge and the area near Florida and Jewell.
Pallbearers were F. J. Papenhagen, R. H. Gleason, Frank Whitney, Edward C. Squire, Stephan Schlientz and Frank Grover.

Mrs. Mary C. Garver
Mrs. Mary C. Garver, a born Brindle and widow of Emuel Garver who died about twenty years ago, died on Thursday morning shortly before four o'clock in the residence of her daughter Mrs. C. A. Kenworthy in Elyria, Ohio. She hailed from Pennsylvania and came at the beginning of the sixties to Defiance, where she spent the greatest part of her life, part (of the time) on a farm in North Richland. Left behind besides the aforementioned daughter are the daughters Mrs. A. A. Martin in Cleveland, O., and Mrs. E. D. Abbott in Springfield, O., as well as the sons C. W. Garver in Elyria, O., and Syl. Garver of here. Additionally there are a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The mortal remains of the elderly lady were brought Friday afternoon on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to Defiance and immediately buried in the Riverside Cemetery.
