Louis H. Gackel of North Richland Met with an accident in a gravel pit. In the gravel pit on the old Henry Milleman farm in North Richland on last Thursday at about half past two o'clock in the afternoon, Louis H. Gackel received injuries, which led to his death shortly before midnight. He and a few other men were taking gravel from the pit, when unexpectedly a gravel wall collapsed and Mr. Gackel, who dodged backwards and stumbled, was thrown against a wagon wheel and buried up to his hips. As quickly as possible, he was freed from his precarious position and taken to Doctor J. Cannon in Florida for treatment, who diagnosed a life-threatening skull fracture on the back of the head. A few minutes before midnight the victim took his last breath. Had he lived until Friday, he would have been 56 years old.
Louis H. Gackel was born in North Richland and had spent his entire lifetime there. On the 25th of December 1890 he married Miss Annie B. Woods, who with the daughter Jessie and the sons Richard and Kenneth survives. Also left behind are the aged father in Florida, the brothers Georg near Jewell and William in Florida, as well as the sisters Mrs. Adam Schatz in Pleasant Township and Mrs. Henry Tröger in Highland Township. The victim was a generally respectable and upright fellow, whose extremely sad death is deeply regretted by many relatives and friends. He had served his fellow citizens in Richland Township as secretary and treasurer and was at his passing a member of the school board.
His mortal remains were taken Sunday afternoon from the former residence and the Church in Independence to the graveyard there with a large accompaniment to the grave. Pastor Schwankovsky from the St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florida officiated. [In the funeral procession] were 129 automobiles .... [The pallbearers were] Henry Thieroff, Ed .... , John Drexler, Henry and ...non and Sanford Durham; [flower bearers were] Carl Mekus, Laverne .... Durham, Ross Heilman, ... and Donald Brinkman.

Alpha Elizabeth Gackel
Alpha, the 13 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Gackel in Florida, died on Thursday evening about 6 o clock from an inflamed appendix. The burial took place Sunday morning at 10 o'clock from the former residence. The deceased, whose passing followed an operation, was the only child of her parents.

Friedrich Gackel, who passed away from the the infirmities of age on the 21st of May in Florida, Ohio, was born on the 8th of January 1832 in Roppenheim, Elsass-Lothringen. At the age of 13 years he came with his parents to this country, first resided for a short time in Williams County and then settled on a farm in North Richland, which he cultivated with industry and success, until forced to retire by age. In the year 1855 he entered into matrimony with Miss Elisabeth Dietsch, who preceded him in death in the year 1903. From this marriage resulted three sons and two daughters. The son Louis lost his life a few years ago through an accident. The sons surviving him are George Gackel in North Richland and William Gackel in Florida, the daughters Mrs. Henry Tröger in Ft. Wayne and Mrs. Adam Schatz on the south Ridge. Left behind also are 14 grandchildren and the widow Ella Gackel, a born Turner, whom he had married in the year 1906. The last years of his life Friedrich Gackel had spent in Florida. He was a good citizen and a dear friend, who we will not soon forget. May he rest in Peace.
