Mrs. Katharine Hoffmann
Mrs. Katharine Hoffmann, wife of Wilhelm Hoffmann and a born Körner, guietly passed away in her sleep on Friday morning about one o'clock in the family residence on Perry Street. For the past several years, the infirmities of age affected her more day by day, and with the stroke attack on Monday of the previous week, her condition was hopeless. Born on the 4th of October 1836 in Marbach in Germany, Mrs. Hoffmann came as a 15 year old girl to the city of New York and later to Adrian in Michigan. There she got to know Mr. Wilhelm Hoffmann and on the 1st of December 1856 in Edgerton, Ohio in her brother's house, married him. Since May of the year 1859 she resided with her family in Defiance -- over half a century in the house, in which on Friday morning the faithful mother's heart stopped beating. Mrs. Hoffmann leaves behind the widower, the daughters Mrs. Henry Seither, Mrs. William Martin and Miss Gertrude Hoffmann, the sons Chas. C. and Edward Hoffmann, the brother G. D. Körner near Edgerton, Ohio, and descendants up to the third degree.
The deceased was a faithful member of the German Methodist Episcopal congregation and (for) 23 years the president of the Womens' Society of the congregation. Her home was her castle, her family her dearest on Earth, her unchangeable belief in a higher eternal happiness her lasting comfort. We cannot from the heart begrudge her the entrance from Belief to seeing. Her mortal remains, Sunday afternoon under the direction of Pastor E. J. Pfeiffer from the former residence, were lowered to the grave in the Riverside Cemetery.
