Jacob Sponsler, residing in the extreme south-east section of the city, died in the night on the previous Friday without any prior serious illness at the age of 71 years. As he had been suffering for long time, no one thought of his condition as being particularly serious. On Thursday evening he retired to his bedroom at his accustomed time, and there his son found him on the next morning, when he went to call him to breakfast, as a corpse in the bed. A heart complaint took his life suddenly during the night. The burial took place on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock from the former residence to the Myers Cemetery on the Ottawa Pike.

Edward Squire
Edward Squire, one of the earlier settlers on Defiance county, died on Saturday afternoon at 2:18 in his residence on lower Jefferson Street. He had already been ailing for the entire winter; the illness, which led to his passing, had only cropped up on Thursday of the previous week, and from the beginning gave the relatives no hope (for a cure).
Edward Squire was born on the 8th of November 1848 in Florence, Erie County, Ohio, as the son of Virgil and Rebecca A. Squire. In 1855 the family moved to Ottawa, Ohio and after a two year stay there then settled in Defiance, where the now deceased spent the entire remainder of his life. As an 11 year old boy he entered the bank business of the firm Cobb & Squire and worked his way up to cashier in the year 1868. He occupied this responsible position until the final changeover in the banking company in 1892 to the First National Bank, whose president he was until his passing. Without a doubt be belonged among the oldest and most well known bankers in Ohio. He was a member of the city council for a few years and president of the same (body), and also served his state faithfully for a decade as trustee for the institute for feeble-minded children. He was a prominent figure in Lodge circles; he belonged to the Tuendawie, the occonoxee-council, the Ensaweesa chapter, the Defiance commandery of the Knights Templar and the Toledo consistory of the Scottish Rite Freemasons.
He was an upright, friendly and affable fellow, who wished all his fellow men well and who actively took part in all efforts for the good of the city and country. He is survived by the widow, with whom he was married in the year 1876.
The burial of his mortal remains took place Tuesday afternoon from the former residence and the Methodist Church in the Riverside Cemetery. The Pastors W. W. Lance from Celina and E. Crist and B. W. Slagle from Defiance officiated. The pallbearers were H. B. Tenzer, W. W. McReynolds, A. M. Minsel, B. J. Emery, E. W. Howey and F. L. Hay.
Jessie Marie Wentz, infant daughter of Earl and Bertha Wentz, died on Sunday evening about half past nine o'clock in the residence of her grandfather Jakob Obermüller, No. 616 Summit Street, at the age of only 7 weeks and 2 days. The little remains were taken to the grave Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the former residence. Pastor H. Folsch officiated.
Emma Hilton, wife of Mr. Filmore Hilton, died on Sunday morning about half past seven in the family residence in Brunersburg after a lengthy illness at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 3 days. She is survived by three sons and one daughter. Her burial took place Tuesday afternoon from the former residence in the Brunersburg Cemetery.

Emma Hilton
Miss Emma Hilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sitterly, died on Saturday morning about half past twelve in her parents' residence in Defiance Township at the age of 31 years. The burial took place Monday afternoon from the former residence and the Oakland Methodist Church in the Myers Cemetery. The pallbearers were A. O. Sloppy, Earl Link, Oskar Link, Herman Link, Floyd Link and Joseph Sitterly.

George Dicus
George Dicus, who had suffered for many years from consumption, died on Sunday in Toledo in the residence of his sister Mrs. Frank Newton at the age of 31 years. He was a son of the George H. Dicus residing at No. 721 Jackson Avenue here, and had spent the greatest part of his life in Defiance. Surviving him are the father, two brothers and six sisters. The remains were brought to Defiance on the Wabash Railroad to his father's house and on the following afternoon buried from there in the Riverside Cemetery. Pastor Crist officiated.

Mrs. Abbie E. Lewis
Mrs. Abbie E. Lewis, a daughter of the of the probate Judge well known throughout all of Northwest Ohio Martin Perkey from Williams county and the wife of Dr. E. N. Lewis, on Sunday evening in the family residence No. 616 Holgate Avenue after a lengthy illness was taken from this time by an easy death. She came many years ago with her spouse , who established himself here as an apothecary, to Defiance and was held in high esteem by a large circle of acquaintances. Along with the widower, the sons Ned and Harry and the daughter Mrs. Catherine Bentley in Toledo, the sister Mrs. Ezra Hilton and many friends mourn her death. Mrs. Lewis had brought her pilgrimage here below to 69 years. The burial took place Wednesday afternoon from the former residence under the direction of the rector F. Zimmerman in the Riverside Cemetery.
