Albert Elliot, one of the old Guard, died on Sunday evening about 7 o'clock in the family residence in North-Richland after a lengthy illness at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 4 days. He was born on 27 December 1837 in Coshocton County, Ohio. From there he enlisted in November 1863 with Co. G of the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in the war and served until his honorable discharge on the 25th of November 1865. Then he settled on a farm in North-Richland and remained resident there until his death. surviving him are three grown children. His wife died about two years ago. The burial took place Wednesday morning from the Church in Independence to the cemetery there.

Ottilie A. Coss
Ottilie A. Coss, daughter of [the married couple] Johann G. and Emilie Brandt, died on Saturday afternoon at about half past 1 in the parental residence in North-Richland after a very short illness. She was born on the 6th of June 1889 in Toledo, and thus was only 24 years, 2 months and 24 days old. On the 27th of February 1912 she was wed by Pastor L. H. Ziemer with Virgil A. Coss, who survives. Also mourning her death are her parents and the following siblings: Mrs.Otto Jacobi in Toledo, Mrs. Martha Warncke in Nunica, Mich., Mrs. Margarethe Hull in Beaverton, Mich., Bertha Brandt in Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Elsie Woodward in Highland Township, Laura, Gustav and Bernhardt in the parental residence. The burial took place Tuesday morning from the former residence in Independence to the Independence cemetery. Pastor L. H. Ziemer officiated.

Anna Maria Houck
Anna Maria Houck, wife of Charles W. Houck and a daughter of John and Maria Scheuermann, born Sandkuhler, died on Saturday morning about half past four at the age of 46 years, 8 months and 5 days in Flower Hospital in Toledo. She was operated on just a few weeks before and had visibly not recovered; then on Friday about midnight she suffered a third apoplectic stroke, which led a few hours later to her death. Born on the 25th of December 1866 in Cincinnati, she came three years later to Defiance and resided here until her death. On the 6th of February 1890 she married Charles W. Houck, who survives. Also left behind are her widowed mother, the brothers George, John and Andrew, as well as the sister Miss Amelia. The remains were Sunday morning brought to the family residence here and on Tuesday afternoon buried in the Riverside cemetery. The funeral celebration was at half past one in the home and 2 o'clock in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church under the direction of Pastor L.H. Ziemer.

Mrs. Mathilda Tennyson
Mrs. Mathilda Tennyson, a born Karst and wife of Mr. James B. Tennyson, died at one o'clock on Wednesday morning of the past week in St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo where she had been operated on successfully for internal growths just a week earlier.
She was born on the 8th of July 1858 in Findlay, Ohio, as the daughter of the late Jakob Karst and his wife Celina, but came already as a child to Defiance, where she spent the greater part of her life. On the 30th of June 1881 she married James B. Tennyson, whom she presented with a son, who with her husband survives. About eight years ago the family moved to Toledo and remains resident there. Along with the husband and the son Carroll, mourning her death are five brothers and four sisters. They are E. P. Karst in North Dakota, Edward Karst in Texas, Fred. Karst in Toledo, Charles M. Karst and Louis A. Karst, whose current residence is unknown, Mrs. J. W. Bridenbaugh in Defiance, Mrs. A. M. Goodman in Portsmouth, O., Mrs. A. J. Kunz in Toledo and Mrs. M. W. Stoll in van Wert.
The remains were brought hither Thursday evening to the old Karst homestead on the corner of Fifth and Jefferson Streets, and on Saturday morning under the direction of Father Brannigan will be buried from the st. Mary's (Catholic) Church in the earth of the Riverside cemetery.

Johann Matthaus Schatz
Johann Matthaus Schatz, one of the oldest German pioneers of the city of Defiance, died on Tuesday morning about half past four in the residence of his son Fred. J. Schatz, No. 722 Jackson Street, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 11 days. On the way home, last Friday afternoon, the frail and nearsighted elder fell near Mr. Rudolph Miller's residence and broke a rib on the right side. This injury led to pneumonia, which the already weakened powers of the man could not withstand.
He was born on the 15th of November 1829 in Obermeisenbach, Bavaria. In the year 1854 he married Miss Eva Hoffmann, with whom seven years later he immigrated to America and settled on the South Ridge. For many years he has resided here in Defiance, where on the 4th of November 1904 his wife preceded him in death.
Surviving the departed are the 5 children John Schatz, Mrs. Margarethe Hagen, Fred. J. Schatz and Mrs. Sophia Roos of here, as well as Christ. Schatz near Standley. Also there are 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Three children preceded him in death.
The burial will take place Thursday afternoon under the direction of Pastor F.A. Kiess in the Riverside Cemetery. The funeral service is (to be held) at half past one o'clock in the former residence and at two o'clock in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
