William Kirtley, Jr., died on Monday afternoon in his residence on Wayne Street unexpectedly suddenly, from a heart attack. In June of the previous year he had had a stroke which had paralyzed one side completely; it had also robbed him of speech for a time, but which had later returned. Since then the previously very hale man had become so helpless, that he had to be lifted and carried. He had ever hoped for improvement, but the second stroke hit him Monday afternoon and tore suddenly the frayed cord of Life.
William Kirtley, Jr., was born on the 1st of November 1858 in Warsaw, Ind., and came in the year 1881 to Defiance, where he has resided ever since. Many years ago he took over the Hotel Crosby and achieved financial success with it. From 1902 until the abolishment of the State Authority for Public Works he belonged to that body. In general he was active as a Republican politician, until there came a split in the party. Then he sided with the Progressives, from whom he received the nomination for State Treasurer for Ohio but was defeated in the vote.
Surviving are his widow, the sons Guy of hereabouts and Fred in Toledo, as well as the daughter Mrs. George May in Napoleon.
The mortal remains were taken Wednesday afternoon from the former residence to the grave in the Riverside cemetery. Pastor P.A. crow from the English Methodist Church officiated.
