Friedrich Hoffert
Friedrich Hoffert, as we here always called him, but baptized as Johann Friedrich Andreas Hoffert, on Thursday shortly after noon in the residence of his granddaughter, Mrs. Elda Slough in East Defiance died peacefully in his sleep. It was a stomach cancer which brought him death -- the same disease, from which his wife died on the 22nd of June 1914, although he did not have to suffer long. And in that his most fervent wish was fulfilled. He was born on the 7th of June 1845 at Gramelow, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany. In the year 1871 he entered into marriage with Johanna Borst. Eleven years later the family immigrated to this country and settled in Defiance, where the now deceased had a position in the Turnbull Wagon Works until a few months ago. Two of his children died in Germany and two here after their immigration. The surviving children are the sons Friedrich in Earlville, Ill., and Karl in Toledo, as well as the daughter Mrs. Jakob Merz in Toledo. With them also remaining behind are six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Friedrich Hoffert had brought his lifetime to 70 years, 10 months and 20 days. He belonged to the A.G.D. Sickness Support Society, the Turnbull Support Society (and the) Lutheran Mutual Support Society. We will also miss our old friend sorely, as we have known him well for many years and he was never missing from the circle of those who met regularly on Saturday evenings with us for a congenial session of conversation and exchange of opinions.
His mortal remains were laid in the grave Sunday afternoon in the Riverside Cemetery, after Pastor H. Folsch had held a funeral service at half past 1 o'clock in the former residence and a half hour later in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The pallbearers were Adam Eck, Jakob Müller and John Butsch from the AGD Sickness Support Society, Ed. Rodel, Ewald Goldfuss and Friedr. Jäger from the Turnbull Support Society. Frank Whetstone and Frank Bock acted as flower bearers.
