Henry Ward died in the City Jail under suspicious circumstances.
Henry ward, unmarried and 36 years old, died Wednesday morning at half past 5 o'clock in the city jail. Whether from a wound, given him by the Negro Ed. Colwell about six o'clock the evening before, or from another cause, is yet to be determined.
(As) The Negro Ed. Colwell, who lives in a shanty on the alley between Perry and Jackson streets south of Gorman's Grocery, tells it, on Tuesday evening Ward came twice to his dwelling. The second time amidst cursing (he made) the threat, that he would kill him. Since Colwell saw a revolver or a knife in Ward's hand, he struck him to the ground with a piece of wood. When ward remained lying unconscious, the Negro gave the alarm to officers Miller and Hall, who on their side summoned Doctors Chapman and Zeller, on whose advice Ward was taken in Martin's ambulance to the city jail.
The Negro was also taken into custody. Both Doctors did not consider Ward's condition to be serious. About 3 o'clock Wednesday morning Dr. Zeller was summoned again, to stop (Ward's) severe vomiting, but (he) still felt, that there was no imminent danger. About half past 5 the vomiting started again, and before a doctor could be summoned again, Ward was dead. Whether he suffocated or the injury killed him, must first be definitely determined. His body shows only a scrape on the left side of the skull. When ward was found unconscious by Colwell's shanty, a large sharp corn-knife lay next to him.
Colwell came hither from Lima or Delphos a few years ago and is 45 years old. Ward leaves behind the parents, two sisters and seven brothers. He resided on Perry Street in the same block as Colwell.
